Greenpeace Belgium: a restrained and activity-based approach

The project at Vergotedok in Brussels’ canal zone is developed with restraint as its guiding principle: only what is necessary is added. The aim is to preserve the layered character of the place from historic townhouses facing the street to warehouses and small-scale industry in the courtyards.

The architectural studio archipelago and Greenpeace started from the inside. They examined what the activity-based working environment should actually consist of? They mapped large and small meetings, informal meetings, focused work, calls, dining, production — and climbing walls. The different functions are organised in shared and flexible spaces, which can also be used by local actors.

Between the front and rear buildings, there is now a sequence of smaller internal and external spaces. Workplace zones are crossed via outdoor passages and terraces. Rainwater is collected and used in the building, and the façades are open to daylight and air. It is the workplace understood as a small urban district.
