New trend: Car parks are becoming mixed-use developments and housing

As more cities direct traffic out of the centre, they are left with countless empty car parks. With a MIPIM Award on the façade, this new trend is gaining the attention of the global construction industry. The French developer Galia and the architectural studio PCA STREAM received the award for Best Mixed-Use Project with the project Fondation. A nine-storey 1960s car park, with a narrow façade and an elongated building volume, has been transformed into a visionary ecosystem of different functions: hotel, spa, café and rooftop gardens, leading inwards towards commercial areas and fitness facilities. When mentioning the word housing, it is only fitting to say a big CONGRATULATIONS to Home.Earth for the MIPIM award in March for the most innovative housing project, Nærheden, in collaboration with EFFEKT and Vandkunsten. The building emits only 4.7 kg CO₂ per m² per year. This is the lowest ever measured for a larger Danish multi-storey residential building; see also the next story. Nordhavn received the award for Best Urban Regeneration Project, and Bestseller’s logistics centre near Amsterdam was nominated as Best Commercial Project. Three Danish projects selected at global level out of nine projects in total gives Scandinavian construction the lead.
