The construction site as a learning tool

Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings is the first building complex constructed with an iron frame, dating back to 1797. Now, the key had been found to resisting fire. It marked the beginning of iron structures such as the Empire State Building and other skyscrapers. The buildings were first a flax mill, producing flax for the cotton industry, then a maltings, and during the Second World War temporarily a military barracks.

Now the buildings have undergone a comprehensive renovation and have been transformed into mixed-use, with exhibition spaces, commercial use and a café. A programme for traditional craft skills was also carried out during the construction process, where the construction site itself was used as a learning tool, including a long-term programme of traditional craft activities with work placements, site tours and courses aimed at all levels, from students to professionals in the industry. The organisation “Historic England” is committed to measuring the social value of both the project and its operation.

The environmental strategy followed a “whole building approach” promoted by Historic England. Putting the building “back to work” meant an extensive renovation of the existing building fabric, including natural ventilation. New facilities have been added, while 80% of the existing building fabric has been retained.
